Mothias sur Feuille

Mothias sur Feuille is a goat’s milk cheese from the region of Poitou-Charentes on the west coast of France. It is named after the town of Mothe-Saint-Heray where it has been made and sold since the early 19th Century. It is distinctive in that is a lovely white small round which is always presented for purchase laying within a curled chestnut leaf. This cheese is AOC protected and therefore must comply with the strict regulations regarding the details of it’s making, inclusive of:

  • The leaf which wraps around the cheese must fall from the tree naturally
  • The leaf must never touch the ground
  • It is to be placed around the cheese on the 3rd to 5th day after the cheese is made.

The leaf is very important as it helps to retain the specific moisture of the cheese as well as imparting an earthy nuance. This ensures a delectable creaminess and subtle tang with a slight nuttiness on the finish.

This cheese is so beautiful on the board!… both rustic and elegant. It is perfect with crisp white wines, but also defined enough to stand up to a single malt whiskey. Enjoy with fresh figs or with shavings of your favorite dark chocolate.
